About the Project

The Mycroft Server Project began in about 1999 and last ran in 2008. It was the practice of putting a Macintosh Classic computer online as a webserver via dial up modem. Using an email program, the dynamic URL was posted to this blog from the Classic.

The Mycroft Server Project: Mars Observer won the 2008 RetroChallenge winter warm-up as most creative project. Observations of Mars were posted during a close approach of Mars to Earth during January 2008 and old software was used to depict the planet's position.

The Mycroft Server Project: Belly Dance Drumbeat won the 2008 RetroChallenge most creative category. That project involved recording sound files on an antique computer and posting them online via dial-up.

Most recently, I have discontinued my dial-up home service to reduce expenses (my ISP charges an additional $15 per month to maintain dial-up along with DSL). Therefore, the next project remains undetermined.
